Books Read in July

Try to read at least three books during the summer - one in June, one in July, and one in August.  Post the book title, author, and your rating.  You might also want to include the genre.  Feel free to share your thoughts about the book, but remember you don't have to post a lengthy review.   You might choose to use a star rating system of 1 - 5 stars, with 5 stars being the best book you've ever read, and 1 star indicating that you didn't like the book.

  1. I finished Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood (I love her last name). The entire time I was reading this book, I was making connections to The Lions of Little Rock, a five star read and one of our Mock Newbery books from last year. Lions is set in Little Rock, Arkansas during the summer of 1958, and Glory Be is set in Hanging Rock, Mississippi in the summer of 1964. I was surprised to discover a character named J.T. in each book. Both books deal with family, friendship, and changes faced by communities during this time period. Glory Be is a four star read. If you like historical fiction, this is a great choice for summer reading.

  2. I finally read Kate Messner's Capture The Flag and am aiming for the next mystery, Hide and Seek. They're about some kids sort of thrown together via their relatives' secret organization, but it's the kids who solve the mysteries. Very fun!

    2. I've read Capture the Flag, but not Hide and Seek. It had some hilarious scenes of baggage handling in the belly of an airport.

  3. For July, I finished reading Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume. It's a book for girls about growing up and facing the challenges in society. It's a great book but I wish it would have been less religious. I would rate it 4 stars. I recommend it for girls.

    1. Miriam, this book is almost a classic for the growing-up genre. I like to say that a book has to be around for 50 years to achieve classic status, so it's almost there - 43 years old. I read it shortly after I started teaching middle school, gave it to my niece to read, and my daughter read it too. I'm thinking of a couple of books in this genre that you might like: Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life and Finally, both by Wendy Mass. One of my favorite books by Wendy Mass is A Mango Shaped Space. Thanks for sharing your reading on the blog!

  4. I'm reading Sway by Amber McRee Turner. It's a sweet story bout Cassie, traveling with her dad, hoping he and mom get back together. So far, I give it 4 stars!
